We are really enjoying the summer at Lakeside. There are so many positives things going on with the school and we are very excited!
This week we had a few sessions to discuss the ideas about the changes at LMS. On Monday, July 24 we hosted 25 voluntary staff members to review and plan for the year. We accomplished a lot. Our main focus was to strengthen our new "Advisory" period that each student will have everyday for 20 minutes. The Advisory will be replacing the AVID strategies period but will still contain many of the same characteristics of the AVID Strategies class.
LMS staff hard at work!
The purpose of the Advisory is to provide a personalized support for the academic, social and emotional needs of our students through a focus on Character Education. We are looking to make the Advisory period purposeful, and we already have staff that would like to assist students with anti-bullying, Mindfulness, Yoga, Study Skills, as well as team building. Stay tuned for more details on this new initiative.
On Tuesday, July 25 we hosted about 150 parents to discuss the proposed changes at LMS. We reviewed the new courses, discussed Zero Period, and some of the changes to our dismissal procedures. If you were not able to make the session, please check out this screen cast of the power point. Parent Night Screen Cast
2017 Boot Camp for Incoming 6th graders
Incoming 6th graders are invited to sign up for a Boot Camp session (click here). The Boot Camp will be a great opportunity for incoming 6th graders to learn about Lakeside Middle School. Students who attended last year raved about how fun and exciting it was... so you don't want to miss out on this opportunity! Slots fill up quickly!
21st Century
This summer the students in the 21st Century program got the opportunity to explore Cumberland County. They were able to fish and swim in Union Lake, construct robots and make clay pots at the local Clay College. According to Mrs. Gandy, the coordinator, "The students did an amazing job this summer whether we were at Lakeside or out exploring the world. I feel the students and staff were able to learn in a fun setting!" Here are some pictures from the summer program:

The World is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities
I was pleasantly surprised when I came into work after a long weekend away from the office and I found a Millville Rock. I have seen these rocks posted on various social media sites and always wanted to find one. Well, this one found me! Thank you to whoever put it on my desk!
The Lightning Round took a brief summer break but we are back to providing you with updates from around the school, and highlights from the students and staff summer activities. Please send us your pictures from your summer excursions! Email Dr. Cook spike.cook@millville.org
Building Updates
When the students come back this year they are going to see a lot of changes. We moved over 44 classrooms in order to better align grade levels and subject areas. The teachers were so awesome with the moves and organizing their materials that the summer custodian crew have had an easy time getting the rooms set up. So far our upstairs rooms are complete. There are many individual rooms throughout the building that have been completed as well. Stay tuned as we progress each week.
Summer Learning at LMS
Lakeside is the hub of summer activities for the district. We are hosting the Extended School Year, Summer Fun Camp, Club 21, and the 21st Century Program. As we get pictures from the various programs we will highlight them in our blog. We are all one big family here!
Mark Your Calender
We are hosting a Parent Night for Lakeside families on July 25, 2017 at 6:00 PM in the Auditorium. The purpose of this Parent Night is to reveal all the changes to the Master Schedule, new electives, and to talk about the plan for 2017-18 school year. Can't make it? We will be recording it and putting it on You Tube.

The World Is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities
Attention all 2017-2018 Lakeside Middle School parents and students: We have some exciting news for you! We are offering many new elective classes for the upcoming school year and would like to know YOUR choices.
We have posted a Google Form which lists the course titles and descriptions and a place for you to tell us your choices. It is important to us that we schedule you for the courses you are interested in, and because we have already started creating schedules, we need your responses as soon as possible!
Please give us your preferences by no later than July 21st. As of July 21st, if we do not have a response from you, we will schedule you in an available spot in a course that has openings.
Please note that if you have already completed the form, you will need to revisit the website and revise your choices since we have added a few more classes to the form!
Don’t take the chance of being scheduled for a class you aren’t interested in!
Here is the link to the Google Form for Course Selection. Just a heads up about the selection... 1 denotes I LOVE IT and 5 is I WILL PASS ON IT.
