Lakeside Lightning - 11/29 - 12/3, 2021

Ms. Ziccardi's students got her a going away present

Lakeside Lightning

Grow through what you go through

We hope that you had a restful Thanksgiving Break. This is a busy time of year and one that can be challenging balancing all of the responsibilities of the holidays. As we return to school, our staff would like to get back to more normal learning conditions. We will be implementing several initiatives on Monday, November 29, 2021 and we are looking for support from our Lakeside community.

Beginning November 29, 2021, we will be making some updates to the procedures at Lakeside Middle School. Below is a list of important changes and we are anticipating your support in getting the students back into more “normal” routines:

Bookbags, Jackets and Lockers

  • All students will be required to place their bookbags, jackets and cell phones in their lockers. This will remain in effect for the rest of the school year.

    • Students will be permitted to take their bookbags and jackets to their last period class in order streamline dismissal.

    • 6th grade students will be dismissed from their last period class at 3:04 PM, 7th Grade at 3:07 PM and 8th Grade at 3:10 PM. This staggered dismissal is implemented to ensure the safety and security of all students as they exit the building.

    • What is allowed?

      • Zip up Binder Bag

      • Purses

      • Water Bottles

  • Water Bottles - Water Bottles will be permitted until we bring back water fountains. We are currently working with the district and local Department of Health to bring back the use of water fountains. Please stay tuned.

Cell Phones

  • Arrival - Cell phones, headphones, earbuds etc. off and away before entering the school.

  • During the day - We are asking students to have their cell phones in the lockers for security reasons and to lessen distractions.

  • Classroom

    • If a teacher sees a cell phone they will update the communications log and do the following:

      • 1st offense - Remind the students of the policy and allow them to put it in the locker. Students will be provided with a pass from the teacher.

      • 2nd offense - Take the phone and put it in a holding place on your desk for the period. Follow up with another conversation about the Cell Phone Policy.

      • 3rd offense - Phone goes to admin for the day - Will be held in the Vice Principal’s Office. Call security to escort the phone.

      • 4th offense and above - VP will process a discipline referral in Infinite Campus and the phone must be picked by a parent or guardian.

    • Dismissal - Cell phones are permitted on the way out of the building after their grade level bell rings.

  • Hallways

    • If a staff member sees a student with a Cell Phone out in the hallway, they are to do the following:

      • First Offense - Remind the student about the Cell Phone Policy.

      • Second Offense - Identify the student and contact security or administration.

Congratulations to the Wellness Month Winners

Get Ready for the Bookfair

Lakeside Lightning Round - November 22 - 26, 2021

Mrs. Hardy coordinated child care for LMS Staff

Lakeside Lightning,

Grow through what you go through

This is a shortened week due to the Thanksgiving Break! We will be having an Early Dismissal on Wednesday. All students will be dismissed by 1:06 PM. We will have breakfast and lunches for the students.

This week the 6th graders participated in CAP sessions designed to help them understand bullying and child assault. Our school is providing CAP Training for Students to…

  • Prevent abuse and bullying
  • Be assertive without being aggressive
  • Learn self-protection strategies to keep them safe from sexual abuse, abduction and other potentially dangerous situations.

On behalf of the staff and administration, we want to wish everyone an amazing Thanksgiving and we hope you enjoy this break!

Mrs. Richardson's Class

Our class explored animation by exploring and creating Turkey Day Parades in Google Slides.  All students were able to create animation, and some went above and beyond the expectation.

Lakeside Lightning Round - November 15 - 19, 2021

LMS Choir Students Outside

Lakeside Lightning,

Grow through what you go through

Prior to the 5 days off we had for Veterans Day and Teachers Convention we were making significant progress with our initiative to curb physical aggression. Unfortunately we had a few incidents this week but they were handled with quickly and swiftly by our Vice Principals and with the help of the Millville PD.

We have noticed that breaks away from school for students cause shifts in behavior. This is why upon returning back to school after the Thanksgiving Break and Holiday Break (in January) we will be scheduling rallies for students to get re-acclimated to school. We really appreciate everyone's support this year as we go through these trying times. The community, BOE, parents and district administration have been extremely supportive to our staff and we are very grateful.

Official Congrats to Leigh Ann Upshaw for the “ That’s Pretty Cool” monthly department recognition from Beth DeForest

Lakeside Lightning Round November 17 - 21, 2021

Lakeside Lightning,

Grow through what you go through

We hope that you enjoyed the much needed break last week for Veterans Day and the NJEA Convention. Although it was a shortened week, our students made a big impact though our 90's Day. According to most of the staff, this was one of the most successful events with unprecedented participation from the students. In addition, we had our first 7th grade dance of the year.

We had almost 200 students that attended and got a chance to let loose.  Lastly, we have now a 7 days in a row without a physical altercation! Perhaps we are really turning the year around in a positive way!

Parent/Guardian Climate and Culture Surveys - Due by Wednesday, November 10, 2021 (Click here to take the survey)

Masks

We have distributed over 4,000 masks this year. We are asking parents and students to please be mindful of wearing and bringing their masks each day. This would help us with the amount of masks we have distributed.

Lakeside Design Work - By Aiden Ford

Aiden is a 7th grade student here at Lakeside Middle School. He has been working on some concepts in Digital Design and we wanted to highlight his artistic work.
