The World Is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

Last week was shortened due to the most recent Nor'easter hitting New Jersey. Snow totals in the area ranged from 8-12 inches. In addition to the snow many people lost their power due to fallen trees. Many of us are hoping that Spring will be here soon.

This week we have a shortened week due to Spring Break! Students will have Early Dismissal at 1:05 PM on Thursday. We will be off until April 9, 2018.

Lakeside Lightning,

National Junior Honor Society
The World Is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

Lakeside Middle School faced some challenges this week with the unprecedented student walkout. This was completely new for the administration and we felt like we made the best decision. Unfortunaltey, not everyone agreed with it and we understand. We seek to include more teachers and parents as we plan for the next scheduled walkout on April 20. Dr. Cook will be sending out an invitation to include parents and teachers in a planning meeting. Stay tuned for more information.

The National Junior Honor Society had their induction last week on Wednesday. Mrs. Booz and Mrs. Gaudio did an excellent job of coordinating the event. We had a great turn out from the parents and relatives of those who were inducted! Congratulations! Here is the list of our new NJHS members.

On Saturday, March 17, LMS hosted the first Millville Youth Empowerment Summit! We had about 60 students and 20 parents attend this event. Everyone was so positive of the impact that the Summit had on them! Since it was such a success, the committee is already planning for next year! Stay tuned for more information!

Square Foot Gardening - Thanks to Mrs. Balinge for winning the Grant
The Square Foot Gardening Club is building a vegetable garden in the courtyard by the auxiliary gym. We will be planting peas, lettuce, carrots, beets and other spring vegetables. Students are planning their raised beds based on the Square Foot method, which is designed to produce more food in less space. We are looking forward to a bountiful, delicious harvest!

Stella soaring in her role for Seussical
The World Is Yours: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities

Happy Birthday to the LMS Lightning Round. This week the blog turns two years old! In two years the blog has been viewed over 70,000 times! This is remarkable for our school. Thank you for your support.

Last week we had such a treat from the students and staff involved with the Seussical the Musical. On Friday and Saturday, the kids sung all of the favorite Seuss rhymes. The set was bright and cheery. The students even got a chance to fly around the stage. A big thank you to Mrs. Booz and Ms. Zeiters for their hard work and determination to make this a success.

This Saturday we will be hosting the first Millville Youth Empowerment Summit at Lakeside Middle School. The event starts at 8:30 AM with free food and registration. At 9:00 AM all of the parents and students will gather in the Auditorium for the Kickoff from City Commissioner (and LMS Parent) Bruce Cooper. He will be introducing the Keynote, Jennifer Webb-McRae, the Cumberland County Prosecutor. After that the students and parents will have an opportunity to go to three sessions of their choice (empowerment, leadership, mindfulness, law enforcement, yoga, and much more). After the breakout sessions, the students will take the stage for the Student Ignite Session. Our closing keynote is aspiring US Assemblymen (and former LMS teacher) Sean Thom. Students will receive giveaways and free food! Be sure to pre-register for the Summit by clicking here.
