Lakeside Lightning Round - January 31 - February 4, 2022

Lakeside Lightning

Grow through what you go through!

As you know, our school is implementing early dismissal starting January 31, 2022. The purpose of this initiative is to assist with the staff absences as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. Students will no longer be housed in the auditorium when their teacher's are absent because we will have more opportunity to provide coverages with our own teachers. With this being said, Dr. Cook would like to remind the students that no matter who is covering their classroom, students are to be respectful.

Lunches will be provided on the way out of the building for walkers and car riders, and those who are riding the bus will received their lunches upon exiting the bus.

Classes will generally be 30 minutes and we will continue to have our Advisory period.

Lakeside Middle School and Holly Heights earn Honorable Mention in School of Character Applications

The results are in from the School of Character applications that were submitted in the fall of 2021. Lakeside Middle School and Holly Heights both have been designated with an Honorable Mention and scored 2.8 to lead the district. This is very exciting news! We want to thank the team (Ms.Shelton, Mrs. Lokuta, Ms. Votta, Ms. Carroll, Ms. Belmonte and Mrs. Langlois) for their hard work and determination with the application process.

Our "You've Been Struck" initiative was identified as one of our strengths. Ms Eppright and the RISE program have been taking a leadership role with this initiative and they are also to be commended. We need to keep striking each other!

Our student reset room was touted as an SEL initiative for those students struggling with classroom learning objectives. As you know, we are currently seeking a new PBSIS para and are looking forward to re-opening this room very soon.

Finally, the School of Character committee was impressed with the Lakeside Lightning Round. We continue to be the only school that sends out a weekly, interactive blog highlighting the accomplishments of the school for our community. We need to continue to tell our story!!!! Continue to send Dr. Cook those stories and pictures to combat the "perception" of our learning environment. Not to mention we are so close to getting 200,000 unique visitors!!!

How about that? We know this has been a tough year but our staff and students continue to take each challenge and grow though it! Next year we will look to improve our score!!!

Jaquwan delivers our Bolts!

Lakeside Lightning,

Grow through what you go through!

January is flying by. We have now been back in school for 3 weeks in 2022. We are asking students to be sure to bring their Chromebooks with to school each day. In addition, we need to make sure that the students are charging them and bringing their chargers. A majority of the learning activities are on the Chromebooks so it is essential to be prepared for the day.

Parents and Guardians are encouraged to join Dr. Cook for a School Improvement meeting on Monday, January 24, 2022 at 6:00 PM in the DMC. We will continue our collaboration to make improvements to Lakeside.

RISE Program

Here are some positive moments and highlights from this week with the RISE Class. Students earned lunch and games for earning BINGO on the board. Certificates were distributed for GOLD this week- on Wednesday every student in the class earned GOLD. Jaquwan has been helping the school deliver the “You’ve Been Struck” Bolts to students/staff in the building.

Lakeside Lightning Round - January 17 - 21, 2022

Lakeside Lightning,

Grow through what you go through!

On behalf of the staff and administration at Lakeside Middle School, we want to acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. for his amazing contributions to our society. Each January we take a day off of school to remember the legacy of Dr. King and more importantly, to continue to uphold his nonviolent principles to equity and diversity.

We know that this school year has been challenging as we continue to deal with the pandemic. One of the quotes by Dr. King that is so meaningful and appropriate for this school year is the following:

If you can't fly, then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.  Dr. King

We hope that each and everyone of you continue to move forward and become better for yourself! We look forward to helping you achieve your goals at Lakeside Middle School!

Lakeside Lightning Round - January 10 - 14, 2022

We wish Ms. Saul (r) on her new venture in California

Lakeside Lightning,

Grow through what you go through

It looks as if 2022 will be forcing us to Pivot just as much as 2020 and 2021 did. We have seen an increase in the county number of COVID 19 and we had two snowstorms that caused us to alter our schedule. We really appreciate everyone's patience as we continue to face these challenges and attempt to solve the problems.

Based on the feedback from the staff, the Virtual Day on January 7, 2022 was very positive. Teachers reported that students were engaged online and our attendance was impressive. Again, our teachers and staff did not have a lot of preparation time for this and handled it amazingly!!!!

We will be back in-person this week.

Lakeside Lightning Round - 1/3 - 1/7, 2022

Dr. Cook and Mrs. Wheton w Cafe Staff

Lakeside Lightning,

Grow through what you go through!

On behalf of the staff and administration at Lakeside Middle School, we would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We hope that everyone enjoyed the winter break and were able to enjoy the holidays. We are expecting big things in 2022!

We have heard your concerns about some issues at Lakeside, and we have created a plan that will go into effect in the New Year improve the safety and security of staff and students.  As many of you realize, this year has been very challenging as we are educating in a pandemic and students have been out of in-person learning for the past two years.  We need to re-establish a learning environment that is both respectful and conducive to learning.  In order to do this, we are putting several new procedures in place that focus on the physical and mental safety of our students and staff.

To assist us with this, the district will be hiring additional security guards which will help us to address the educational needs and safety of our students. Some of the expectations we have for all students is to show up to class on time, to treat everyone with respect, to use appropriate language, to not wander the halls or try to skip classes, and to follow any rules that will keep us all safe.   Any student who exhibits unsafe behavior whether running in the halls, wandering the halls, being late to class without a pass, or any other behavior that could potentially harm our students and staff will be dealt with according to our Code of Conduct. Those who continually violate our expectations will be subject to increased disciplinary consequences and potential change of placement from our school.

Therefore we wanted to remind the students about our focus on safety and security at Lakeside Middle School:

Arrival Procedure

  • Students are to remove hats, hoods, earbuds, cell phones and have their mask on upon entering the building.

  • Students are to report directly to homeroom.

  • The bathrooms will not be available for students until 1st period.

  • Students will need to ask permission to use their locker once they are in homeroom.

  • Students arriving to homeroom after 8:32 AM will be required to sign in at the front desk and will be marked late to school.

Bathroom Procedure (Beginning January 10, 2022)

  • All students must fill out a Google Document upon leaving their class for the bathroom.

  • Only one student at a time is permitted to leave the room to use the bathroom.

  • Each class will have a general pass that corresponds to the room number and hallway. It will be color coded to help staff identify the grade level.

  • Students will only be able to use bathrooms in the designated area.

Hallway Procedure

  • Students are to stay to the right as well as keep their hands, feet, and negative comments to themselves.

  • Students are to use quiet voices in the hallway.

  • There will be no running, playing, or play fighting in the hallways.

  • There will be no eating or drinking in the hallways.

Military Visit to LMS
On Tuesday, Dec 21, 2021, Captain Alicyn Coulter from the United States Army visited Ms. McDowell’s classes.  Captain Coulter is a native of Millville and wanted to give back to the community.  She talked about her beginnings and where she is now.  The opportunities the military has given her, and will continue to give her, are endless.  The students were excited and had many questions. The enthusiasm can be seen in the pictures.
