April 30 - May 4, 2018

Who has the lighting power?
Lakeside Lightning,

The World is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

We are hoping that the April showers (and cold) will bring May flowers! There is another exciting week planned at Lakeside Middle School! We will be starting our PARCC this week for the 6th graders. Over the past few years, LMS has improved our PARCC growth in many areas such as by demographics and special education. We hope to continue that trend this year!

Last week we successfully did a lock down during a lunch period. We do not normally do this but we know that we need to practice drills at all different times. The students and staff in the cafeteria did a great job (as the rest of the school did as well). We even had a few parents who happened to be int he building and were able to experience a lock down drill. They were very impressed with the students! Thank you to everyone for their participation.

We had a very successful Take Your Child To Work Day on Thursday. We hosted 23 kids from the LMS staff. They were able to learn about our announcements, cameras, STEM, team building and even made pancakes! Thanks to everyone for their participation!

Keep your eyes on the chicks - We may have chickens this week. Be sure to stay tuned to our live feed! Check out our live webcam (click here) to see eggs hatch in Ms. Carroll's classroom!

Another Outstanding Performance by Lakeside Middle School
Kerry Shea, Cali Sloan, Spencer Hickman-Hakola, and Charlene Walker performed in the All South Jersey Elementary Honors Band today! Ms. Zeiters conducted
Probability in Mrs. Lopergolo's room
On Friday, Mrs. Lopergolo's students put probability into action. They made predictions about how objects were going to land. Students used knowledge of area and volume of liquids to toss marshmallows and water bottles.

Dr. Cook with the top fundraisers
Lakeside Lightning,

The World Is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

We had a very exciting week at LMS. We hosted the Franklin Institute Traveling Science Show and it was an amazing night. Be sure to see Brett Clendaniel's article below. We also hosted the incoming 6th grade Special Education students and parents. They were able to meet their teachers, tour the building and hear from LMS administration. On Friday we held our annual Bubbles for Autism. This event increases the awareness of Autism and provides an opportunity for students to connect with each while blowing bubbles. A good time was had by all who attended!

Franklin Institute Traveling Science Show a Success at LMS!
Submitted by Brett Clendaniel, Connecting Families to Communities
THANK YOU so much for participating in this years’ Franklin Institute Traveling Science Show.  In total, there were 318 people (comprised of 139 families) that attended last night’s festivities.  There were students from every single elementary school, Lakeside Middle School, Memorial High, and Child Family Center in attendance.  Students even attended from as far away as Deerfield Twp. Elementary School, Maurice River Elementary School, and Rossi Middle School in Vineland.  This was more than we had last year!

A very special THANK YOU to Ms. Carroll of Lakeside and Ms. Ismail from Silver Run School.  There is absolutely no way that this show would have been as successful without your leadership, guidance, and commitment to the students of Millville.   Thank you for being the representatives of your school, assisting with marketing, recruiting other teachers, and for organizing the majority of the 16 experiment tables that we had in the foyer.  Your passion is why I believe 80% of the families that attended were from Lakeside and Silver Run Schools.

I talked to many parents after the show who were elated with the performance and the demonstrations in the hallways. One dad explained that this was the first time he’s attended a school function so far this year and that he did it because his daughter “bugged him for a month straight.”  He said that he was happy that he came and had a blast seeing his daughter chosen as one of the helpers during the show.  Thanks again for another successful program!

Teen Arts - LMS Students Advance!
Kerry Shea, Hannah Runkle, Charlee Cain all had their artwork selected on Friday to advance to the State Show for Teen Arts Festival. 20 artworks were selected from Cumberland County Teen Arts and these three students from Lakeside were chosen for the state show which will showcase artwork from middle & high schools from the entire state of New Jersey. The state show will be up in the following months!
