Lakeside Lightning,

Lakeside is an opportunity, not an obligation

We hope you are all enjoying Memorial Day Weekend. This is a very special time for our country as we pay respects for real reason we have this extra time off. In short, Memorial Day is a Federal Holiday for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

Here is a video about Memorial Day

Mrs. Gaudio and Dr. Cook with  Jordan, Jorja, and Phoebe
Last week we had an amazing time at Lakeside. On Monday, 3 eighth graders (Jordan Sprowl, Phoebe Baldasarre, Jorja Hibschman) were honored at Stockton University for winning the Stock Market Challenge 2015. Our team beat out at least 15,000 teams in New Jersey and thousands more nation wide as they were named the Middle School Champions.

On Wednesday, our 8th graders took the NJASK Science. In addition, the National Junior Honor Society (who came in early) went to Dave and Busters. Later on Wednesday, the entire staff gathered together to analyze 8 areas for improvement for next year. Teams were grouped randomly and everyone had the opportunity to share ideas. Look out for an awesome year!  On Thursday, the Student Council and Student Leaders club went to Six Flags for their annual trip.

This week our 8th graders will be going on their field trip to iPlay America. The 8th graders will have the opportunity to play games in New Jersey's lagest indoor boardwalk. Only those 8th graders who have earned enough points and paid their admission fee will be able to attend.

Any 8th grader who missed the NJASK Science assessment will need to participate in the Make-Ups on Wednesday. This Thursday evening is the annual AVID Awards Dinner at 6:00 PM. AVID students  and parents will great food while getting honored for their hard work!

This Friday our 6th graders will their annual trip. This year the eligible 6th graders will be going to the Funplex complex in Mt. Laurel.

Lakeside Lightning,

Lakeside is an opportunity, not an obligation!

Shelby and Robert at Cumberland County Government Day
Another awesome week at Lakeside Middle School. We completed our Spring Concerts this week as the 6th and 7th graders were able to show us their skills!

On Monday, we had two LMS students represent us at the County Government Day. Shelby Souders and Robert Cuff spent the day with Cumberland County Officials learning the intricacies of our local government.

Lakeside 8th grader, Savasia Durham, and her sister, Shania, an 11th grader at MHS presented to the 4th graders at Holly Heights about their Lenni Lenape culture.  Savasia dressed like a typical teenager and Shania in her regalia to show that they are normal teenagers whose culture is very important to them.  They talked to the 4th graders about attending powwows, showed them their dances, how they respect the elders of the tribe, and the importance of the Eagle feathers to their culture.  In the one picture below, Savasia is holding up the eagle feathers, and in another picture they are teaching them one of the jingle dances.  The 4th graders asked some amazing questions and were so respectful of their visitors.

Mrs. Oquendo's class with Officer Nick Cioncotti
This week Mrs. Oquendo's class welcomed Officer Nick Cincotti.  He discussed the importance of respect and realizing your destiny, which only we can control.  The kids thoroughly enjoyed speaking with him.

Our 8th graders surprised Mrs. Stroup and her husband (Officer Stroup) with a baby shower. The students put a lot of time and effort into the surprise. They are excited to meet the baby!

Mrs. Abel coordinated her annual Bike Trip to Cape May. When you look at the pictures of the week below, you will see how much fun they had. Congratulations to all who earned their way!

Congratulations to Mrs. Richardson who recently earner her Masters Degree from Rowan University! Be sure to congratulate Mrs. Richardson when you see her on this awesome accomplishment.
