Lakeside Lightning,

Turning Dreams Into Reality

Parents as Leaders Franklin Institute Weather Show
We had another excellent week at LMS this week! Check out all of the exciting things that make LMS a premier middle school.

Parents As Leaders - What a GREAT Night
On Wednesday, LMS hosted Parents As Leaders from Bacon, Silver Run and of course LMS!

Brett Clendaniel, Jr, had this to say for those in attendance, "I just wanted to thank each of you again for taking the time to be apart of an extremely successful event at Lakeside Middle School. According to the sign-in sheets, there were 342 total people who attended the event which was comprised of 139 families. This was a resounding success for our program and will be an incredible boost for the Parents As Leaders Cooperative in each of our schools as we move forward. The collaborative approach that our team took towards this event is what made this event what it was."

If you are interested in joining the LMS Parents as Leaders Group please contact our liaison, Ms. Moratelli.

Mr. Perry is documenting the AVID project
AVID Students and the Millville Neighborhood Alliance
This week the AVID students presented their preliminary presentations to the Millville Neighborhood Alliance. There were 20 community members plus the Millville Neighborhood Alliance providing feedback to our students regarding their projects. The final presentations will be on March 14. The successful team will be awarded a cash incentive to complete their project.

AVID Students Taking the Lead in Science
The group from CU Maurice River is coming on Tuesday to present information about the community serenity and wildlife garden that our 6th grade AVID students will be helping to design and plant. All 6th grade AVID students will be encouraged to 8th and 9th period on Tuesday for the project. If a student cannot miss their 8th period class due to poor academic performance they should not attend the presentation.

LMS to host Pleasantville for an AVID Site Visit
Since we are a National Demonstration Site, LMS will be hosting Pleasantville School District on Wednesday, March 1. Our visitors will be touring the building, meeting with teachers and students

Mrs. Schwailik's Students are Halfway to 100!
Last year Mrs. Schwailik's students took an almost insurmountable task of reading 100 books during the school year. Sure enough they pulled it off. Not to be outdone, her class this year wants to read more. Mrs. Schwailik said that her students this year reached the halfway mark (50) earlier than last year's group. It is possible that will read MORE than 100! Stay tuned for more details!

7th Graders Learn About Overcoming Obstacles from Master Brian Moragne
Master Moragne teaching Caporeira to 7th graders
This week the 7th graders were treated to an inspirational guest speaker, Brian Morange. Master Brian Morágne is the Owner and Head Master of the Freestyle Martial Arts Academy. He has taught Martial Arts for over 25 years and has developed a long standing reputation for high standards in quality instruction. He has a positive impact in his local South Jersey Community, and is most proud of his achievements developing students. His students have awesome attitudes as well as superior levels of proficiency.

At the assembly, Master Moragne share his story of growing up poor in Atlantic City. He often skipped meals because his family simply could not afford it. Faced with dealing drugs, dropping out of school or choosing a different path, Master Moragne chose to become a positive member of society. He talked with the students about never giving up. The kids loved the assembly because they were able to learn some Caporeira as well as see one of their teachers, Mrs. Cuesta, show off her skills.

Lakeside Lightning,

Turning Dreams Into Reality

Mr. Fien won one of the In-Service raffles
We hope you enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather this past weekend. Who would have thought we would be wearing shorts?

Parents - Thank you for taking the kids for a 4 day weekend! We used the time on Friday to continue our updating of the curriculum, sharing best practices, and we even had time to have a little fun! Our in-service was a success because our teachers and the RAC were able to have time and space to plan and reflect on how we can best meet the needs of your children. We are grateful to have the time!

This past week we also had our first Pajama Day at LMS in a long time. The PBSIS sponsored event raised over 150 dollars that will be used for our upcoming events. Since this was such a big hit, we are going to have another Pajama Day on March 17th!

Franklin Institute Traveling Science Show at LMS - Wednesday, February, 22 at 7:00 PM
Parents as Leaders is an organization that has been working with Lakeside families as well as families at Silver Run and Bacon. They are partnering with the Franklin Institute and hosting an event here at Lakeside on February 22nd at 7:00. The Franklin Institute will perform their Traveling Science Show in our auditorium. This event has been paid for completely by Parents as Leaders so it is free for all Lakeside, Bacon, and Silver Run families. We are hoping to have a fantastic turnout!

After the show, we are looking to set up tables outside of the auditorium where the families can participate in small scale science experiments and observe demonstrations. . We currently have science teachers from Silver Run and Lakeside who are going to set up experiments with the help of their students. Be sure to come out and enjoy a special evening.

Lakeside Lightning,

Turning Dreams Into Reality

Mrs. DeCelemnti's students are working hard
We had another epic week at LMS. I am sure we were all sitting near the phone on Wednesday night and Thursday morning waiting for the call from Dr. Gentile. To Dr. Gentile's credit, he made a very difficult call (most New Jersey schools were closed).

When asked about this, Dr. Gentile commented that these decisions are never easy. He is on the phone with other superintendents throughout the night and into the early morning. They look at National Weather Service Data and communicate with local law enforcement. We appreciate Dr. Gentile's dedication to our school district and we can thank him when we get out of school a day before the surrounding school districts!

The 6th grade science students are currently working on a PBL (Problem Based Learning) about honey bees to investigate the possible causes of the declining bee population across the state of NJ.

The students will be using the information that Mr. Schuler presented on Monday to help them understand why honey bee colony collapse is such an important environmental and economic issue. Mr. Schuler did a great job of presenting information for our students to gain information that will aid them in developing an understanding of the importance of pollinators to agriculture and our environment in general. Most notably, the 6th graders did a fantastic job throughout the assembly. We are planning to reward them for their responsible behavior for our guest!

Connor hanging at Lightning Strikes Bogarts
On Wednesday evening we had about 35 AVID parents attend a Parent Night. During the evening the parents got the opportunity to learn how powerful the strategies such as Philosophical Chairs, Binders and Tutorials are to the success of our students. Parents debated cell phone use in school, went through a modified binder boot camp, and learned the questioning strategies used in tutorials. Thank you to the AVID Site Team who volunteered their time and of course the parents who attended!

This Saturday we hosted our monthly Lightning Strikes Bogarts. We had 15 students attend and most of their parents stayed as well. The students helped complete a Tree of Life painting that will be donated to Bogarts as memorial for Erin Dobson, owner of Bogarts, who recently passed away.  She was so supportive of the Lightning Strikes Bogarts program and loved our kids hanging out at the bookstore/coffee shop. Thanks to all of the students and parents who attended and the teachers who volunteered their time!

We look forward to another excellent week. Be sure to mark your calendars as we do not have school on Friday, February 17 and Monday February 20.
