Lakeside Lightning,

The World Is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

Mrs. Pettit and Mrs. Hardy showing College Spirit
We had another successful opening at Lakeside Middle School. This year we understand that there have been a lot of changes for students and for teachers. We are confident that once we get through the next few weeks that everyone will feel much more confident.

Each of the grade levels had assemblies this week to review expectations. The teachers and Vice Principals did a great job of carrying out the message of this year. We have very high expectations for the students in both the academic and behavioral areas. The reviewed the expectations for hallway, cafeteria and classrooms.  This week during the Advisory period all students will be required to review the Student Handbook and indicate that they have read and understand it.

On Friday, Dr. Cook officially began the academic year with the All School Assembly. He also discussed the high academic expectations and the need for students to respect the adults in the building. He gave students an opportunity to try basic mindfulness techniques to calm themselves down before having issues with each other or with adults. Dr. Cook also reviewed the theme and shared 8th grade student essays from Mr. Fien's math class. This really helped students to see how their fellow students are addressing this year's theme. He shared with the students why all the staff were wearing College shirts. As a National AVID Demonstration School, and a Middle School with high academic rigor, we want to encourage everyone to be exposed to college! We will be having these monthly so stay tuned.

We are so very excited for this year as we turn obstacles into opportunities!

September 11
Please take a few minutes on Monday to honor those who lost their lives in this tragedy. Even though it was 16 years ago and none of our students were even born yet, it is important to understand the impact of what happened. Here are some resources for teachers and students regarding September 11.
