February 6 - 10, 2017

Lakeside Lightning,

6th and 7th grade students of the month
Turning Dreams Into Reality

We hope you had a SUPER weekend! At the time of this post, we do not know who will win the Super Bowl but we do know who are the real winners... the Lakeside Staff and Students!!!

Last week was another epic week at Lakeside. Students and staff continued to turn dreams into reality through assessments, innovative learning opportunities and just plain old fun. The week was capped off with the 6th grade Valentines Dance. The 6th graders had a lot of fun as they danced to the latest songs, enjoyed the snacks and made memories. Thank you to Mr. Godfrey and the 6th grade team for supporting this event.

On Monday, February 6, we will be having an assembly for the 6th grade students from 9-10:30 am.  Tim Schuler, an apiarist (beekeeper) from the NJ Dept of Agriculture will be joining us to speak with the 6th graders about beekeeping and the honey bee population in New Jersey.

The 6th grade science students are currently working on a PBL (Problem Based Learning) about honey bees to investigate the possible causes of the declining bee population across the state of NJ.  The students will be using the information that Mr. Schuler presents to help them understand why honey bee colony collapse is such an important environmental and economic issue.  All of the 6th graders will eventually be making a bee-friendly garden here on Lakeside’s campus to help support our local population of honey bees here in Millville.  Having Mr. Schuler here is a unique opportunity for our students to gain information that will aid them in developing an understanding of the importance of pollinators to agriculture and our environment in general. We are looking forward to this unique learning opportunity.

National School Counselors Week - Message from Dr. Gentile, Superintendent of Schools
Our community counts on us to be there for its children. As we statistically score high in areas like children living in poverty, unemployment, and teen pregnancy, we also have staff who consistently go the extra mile to help kids.

This week, February 6 – 10, is National School Counselor Week and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Millville counselors for their efforts and hard work.  We have a great staff of Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, SAC’s, & CST that do so much for our students and their families.

So often counselors are working behind the scenes and doing things that are not necessarily noticed, but are extraordinarily important to the kids. Sure, we may drive you crazy when we are asking for that extra chance for a student, but we often are the voice of the child who may be going through more than you know. Please join me this week and send your thanks to the Millville counselors, and remember that, “Everyone you meet is going through a battle that you may know nothing about.  Be kind always.”

Congratulations to the 6th and 7th grade Students of the Month

Turning Dreams Into Reality

Mrs. Borchert and the Chick Fil A Cow
Reminder - There is no school on Monday, January 30, 2017 due to Teacher In-Service

We had another amazing week at Lakeside. We had our monthly Millville Neighborhood Alliance Meeting with the 8th grade AVID students. This month they continued working on the various problem-based activities our students have identified. Each of the Neighborhood Alliance representatives worked with our students to refine their presentations.

On Tuesday we hosted our monthly PTO meeting. The parents planned the upcoming fundraisers and activities to support the teachers and students. In case you missed the meeting, you can always check out our Facebook page for the video.

Also on Tuesday, the AVID site team hosted their annual fundraiser at the Stratosphere Trampoline Park in Hainesport, NJ. The trip was well attended and the students (and staff) had a great time. Dr. Cook was even doing flips and climbing the rock wall.

We had a great turn out for our Chick Fil A night. In fact the Chick Fil A cow made a special visit to LMS and was even on our announcements! Thank you to everyone for their support.

PBSIS Ice Cream Social
On Wednesday, Our PBSIS team coordinated an Ice Cream Social during the lunches and the students really enjoyed their treat. Be sure to continue to follow our 4 basic rules (Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be a Good Learner) to earn ZAPS!

Also on Wednesday we had our monthly Staff Meeting. The teachers were trained in the new LGBTQ requirements for schools. In addition, we learned more about our ESS program and the awesome results so far this year.

The 8th grade teachers and students have already begun planning out their end of the year trip. This year will be different than the past. Stay tuned for more details.

Students - Enjoy the 3 day weekend and we will see you on Tuesday!

21st Century News
Shawn Jenkins & Gerald Bruman came from Millville High School to teach our 21st Century students about robotics. They even brought the high school Robotics Club's competitive robots.  They basically gave our students a box of parts and said, "Build a robot." Our kids learned to work in teams, push through their frustration levels, and reap the benefits of their hard work with an obstacle course challenge today.  It was an awesome experience and a metaphor for life. Thank you Mr. Bruman and Mr. Jenkins for supporting LMS 21st Century!
