Lakeside Lightning,

Turning Dreams Into Reality

We just passed 10,000 page views on the Lakeside Lightning! Thank you for your support!

We are seeing the end of August this week and the beginning of September. Can you believe there are only a few days left until school starts? We are so excited for the start of a new school year. We have so much in store for our students, parents and community members!

Last week we continued with preparation for the new school year. Our front office staff completed the Opening Day packets for all of the important information. In addition, our new staff attended New Teacher Orientation. On Wednesday, our House Office secretaries and Vice Principals were trained in the new discipline database, SWIS. Also on Wednesday, our PBSIS team met to plan out this year and review the action plan for 16-17 school year.

This week we are looking forward to 6th Grade Orientation. This year's orientation will take place from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 in the Auditorium. Parents will have the opportunity to learn more about our school and get a chance to meet staff.

We hope that everyone enjoys their last full week of Summer Vacation!

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Stroup on the birth of Jaxon Robert Stroup who was born on August 26th at 10:34 PM. He weighed 7 lbs 10 oz and was 20 inches long. Ryan, Jaxon and mom are all doing great. We would like to thank everyone for all of the prayers and well wishes that were sent our way!

Week in Review
We had another excellent week at Lakeside Middle School. The hallways (for the most part) are cleaned and staff should have no problem returning to their rooms. The custodians have done an excellent job this summer!

Last week we continued our involvement in the weekly summer Block Party at 2nd and Pine. We had volunteers come out and support the Senior High School as they handed out bookbags and school supplies. This was the last Block Party for the summer and we hope to continue our participation next summer!

Mrs. Bergman created a flexible seating approach to her class
Lakeside hosted the Millville Neighborhood Alliance on Thursday in the DMC. During the meeting, the Neighborhood Alliance heard about some great ideas from Mrs. Bergman, Mrs. Hallenbeck and Mrs. Lokuta. Mrs. Bergman talked about her community initiative called the Front Door Project. She, along with volunteers, will be canvassing the city to offer residents the opportunity to have their front door painted for free. Here is the website she created to begin getting spreading the word.

Mrs. Hallenbeck and Mrs. Lokuta talked about a project involving 8th grade AVID students in a Problem Based Learning activity to help the Neighborhood Alliance solve problems in the community. This activity will help our students identify and solve problems that they feel need attention. It will also allow the Neighborhood Alliance the opportunity to work closely with our students.

In addition, Lakeside will have two other new initiatives this year. Mrs. Cuesta has secured a partnership with Bogarts to allow us to have monthly programming to support our literacy initiative. Ms. Moratelli will be assisting with the Parents as Leaders program to help parents collaborate with each other and access resources in the community.

Mrs. Salvati will be re-establishing the PTA and has an aggressive fundraising project in store for Lakeside Middle School. We already have a fall fundraiser planned and we will begin recruiting interested parents to assist with our PTA.

As you can see, Lakeside will be very much committed to sustained community involvement!

Lakeside Lightning,

Turning Dreams into Reality!

Staff at the Strategic Planning Session
We had an amazing week at Lakeside Middle School! Our week started off with the first annual Boot Camp for incoming 6th graders. We had 4 sessions with a total of 115 students who participated. Students had the opportunity to interact with teachers, learn a little about the school, go on a scavenger hunt, set goals, and build binders. The most important part of the Boot Camp was the fact that students got a chance to meet potential classmates and make new friends.

On Wednesday we had close to 30 staff volunteer to participate in a strategic planning session for Lakeside. Staff took a trip down memory lane and talked about the great things that have happened at Lakeside since we opened our doors in 1999. Then the staff discussed what the ideal school looked like and began to work on a new mission and vision statement. We concluded the event by reflecting on this upcoming year and how we are going to turn dreams into reality. This work is not finished. We will be having more sessions including all staff, parents, alumni, community members and students. Our goal is to have a new mission and vision statement by December 2016. Stay tuned for more details.

Also on Wednesday, Lakeside staff came out to support the weekly Block Party at 2nd and Pine. We painted faces, played wiffle ball and basketball with the neighborhood children. We will be at this week's block party (August 17 from 10 AM - 2 PM) supporting the Senior High School as they handout bookbags and create memories for the kids. Come on out and support this initiative.

Millville Administrators at NJPSA
Last week we were busy learning and planning for the upcoming year. The administrators participated in 3 days of professional development focused on improving the Millville Public Schools. We had great discussions and spent a lot of time collaborating between the schools. Throughout the 3 days we focused on providing effective feedback for teachers, identifying specific areas for improvement, learning how to coach staff, and how to build a culture focused on learning.

In addition, we had a group of teachers who attended the RAC Summer Institute at Stockton University. The staff learned about establishing effective Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) as well as how the whole school literacy initiative will improve our students' reading comprehension.

This week we will be hosting our first annual Boot Camp for incoming 6th graders on Monday and Tuesday morning.  We have over 120 students registered for this exciting opportunity. Parents can drop their children off on the parking lot side (6th grade entrance). During the Boot Camp, students will learn about the school through activities such as binder building, scavenger hunt, and other team-building games. We look forward to seeing everyone this week!
