Spring Break Edition (March 28- April 1)

Lakeside Lightning,

Good Luck at RM Bacon, Mr. Coyle!
The Lakeside Lightning had a very busy week leading up to the Spring Break.

On Tuesday, March 22, the National Junior Honor Society held their annual induction ceremony in the Performing Arts Center. Students were selected based on the core beliefs of the NJHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship. A BIG THANK YOU to the coordinators of the program Mrs. Gaudio and Mrs. Booz. Congratulations to all of our new inductees and their parents!

For the past few weeks, students have been encouraged to raise money for JDRF walk on Thursday, March 24. Lakeside has supported JDRF for many years and continues to raise money and awareness for this cause. JDRF is major charitable organization dedicated to funding Type 1 Diabetes research. This year we had over 150 students participate in the walk and we raised over $6,000.00! For all their hard work and effort in fundraising, the students got a chance to walk, listen to music from DJ Mr. Garrison, and hear the message about JDRF from Mrs. Pettit. This event was co-sponsored by AVID. THANK YOU to all the teachers who helped organize the event and for their support of our students!

Also on March 24 we hosted our annual PBSIS Movie Reward. Students who have been following our rules have been rewarded with Zaps. Once they earned enough Zaps, the students were able to kick back and relax while watching The Good Dinosaur. We had over 500 students attend the Movie Reward! A BIG THANK YOU to the PBSIS Committee for establishing the reward for our students!

Dr. Cook held his first Staff Meeting on Wednesday, March 23 in the cafeteria. He reviewed his first 13 days at Lakeside and talked with the staff about his vision for the school. The staff also had the opportunity to hear updates on PARCC from Mrs. Benfer, 6th grade news from Mr. Godfrey, 7th grade news from Mr. Jimenez, and front office news from Mrs. Diaz.

Mr. Coyle, who will be the new Principal at RM Bacon starting April 4, was honored for his years of service at Lakeside Middle School at the staff meeting. Be sure to check out the article in the Daily Journal about Mr. Coyle's new position. He will be missed at Lakeside!

Enjoy the rest of your Spring Break. We will see you back at school on April 4, 2016.

We also had our Spring play last week, The Music Man. The students did a phenomenal job with the production. Everyone who was able to see it was so impressed. There were a lot of teachers who were responsible for assisting with the play. Thanks also goes out Mrs. Gaudio and Mrs. Booz for coordinating the amazing production!

Some of the 7th and 8th grade math teachers celebrated Pi Day this past Monday (3/14). The Philly Pretzel Factory made us our own Pi symbol pretzels as well as circular pretzels that the students could find the circumference of and discover Pi on their own.  Some classes also had a paper chain competition where they tried to create the longest paper chain using as many digits of pi as possible. Overall, it was a very successful and an enjoyable day for everyone involved! See below for pictures!

This week we will be inducting students into the National Junior Honor Society! The event takes place on Tuesday, March 22 at 6:30 PM in the Performing Arts Center. We hope to see you there.

March 14 - 18, 2016

Lakeside Lightning,

Come out and support the show!
What a week we had at Lakeside. Last week we published the first Lightning Round and it has taken off. According to our Google stats, the blog has had over 475 page views across the United States. According to our Revolver Map widget, we have had 276 unique visitors. This is a great start and as the word spreads, we will see an increase from international sites.

Throughout the week the Lakeside community was engaged in a variety of activities in and out of the classroom. Our play, The Music Man, is in the final stages of preparation for next week's show. Be sure to come out and support our students on Friday, March 18 and Saturday March 19. Both shows start at 7:00 PM. Also, be on the lookout for "Kiss the Cast" messages during lunches. Each message is .25 cents.

The AVID students had a few trips this past week. They traveled to The College of New Jersey and Rowan University. The students and teachers were impressed with their experiences and they did an amazing job representing Millville Public Schools.

We wear our Lakeside gear with PRIDE!
Our teachers worked collaboratively during their Sub-Committee meetings on Wednesday. Each teacher is a member of a Sub-Committee and are planning excellent activities to improve Lakeside. The School Leadership Committee had their first meet with Dr. Cook on Thursday. There was rich discussion on issues involving hallway behavior and student discipline. Expect to see major improvements in these areas over the next few weeks! In order for us to achieve our school goals, we need to ensure everyone feels safe.

Dr. Cook has been meeting formally with every staff member. Although it may take a few months, he is committed to sitting down individually with each staff and discussing areas we are successful and areas we need to improve.  He has also been connecting with students and asking one question, "What do you like about Lakeside?"

This week the Science Department will be displaying the annual projects from the students. On Tuesday, they will be judging the contestants and on Wednesday and Thursday the students will be able to see the outstanding projects. On Wednesday night from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, the parents will be able to visit the school and see the projects!

Important Daily Announcements (Be sure to checkout the widget on the side for all announcements and sign up for the email)
Starting March 11th, Sparkles and Suits will be collecting semi-formal donations. We will be accepting dresses, suits, shoes, etc. in good condition. If you are in need of semi attire, ballots will be located in the main office as of Monday, March 14th.

The March Coin Drop AVID fundraiser is up and running! Bring your spare change to the cafeteria by March 15th to help select which teacher will “win” the honor of either getting a pie in the face, dressing like a leprechaun, or dressing like a pirate for a day.

It’s that time of the year again!  AVID is sponsoring its annual JDRF Kid’s Walk for the Cure.  Help us raise funds to find a cure for diabetes by asking your friends and family to sponsor you.  Any student who gets at least $10 in sponsor donations will attend the walk on March 24th from 8:40-10:40.  As an extra incentive, all students who raise at least $20 will get to attend the walk AND get a free ticket to the PBSIS movie that afternoon.  Money is due my MARCH 17.  See Mrs. Lokuta in B106 if you have any questions.
