Lakeside Lightning Round - December 21 - 25, 2020

Mrs. Sooy visited all 6th graders on the Honor Roll

Lakeside Lightning,

The School of Tomorrow, Today!

We have three days this week before Holiday Break. As we all know, 2020 has presented us with unprecedented challenges and opportunities. We appreciate all of the support and feedback as we have navigated this experience.

This week we are distributing 600 Gratitude Letters to those students who the staff have identified as being grateful for their contribution. At Lakeside Middle School, we believe that gratitude is something that can change the way we perceive the world. It causes us to look and identify the positive things in our life.

As we approach the Holiday Break, our staff have been encouraged (actually they have been directed) to turn off their devices at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 and to not turn them back on until Sunday, January 3, 2021. We want the staff to use the break to be mindful about disconnecting, recharging and rejuvenating. We are also asking students to do the same thing. Please take this Holiday Break as it is intended... a break!

Lakeside Mindfulness Walk

We are always preparing for the eventual return of staff and students. This week, Dr. Cook, Principal of Lakeside Middle School, created a video showing the Mindfulness Walk. We are very grateful of Dr. Kate Felice who has collaborated with us with the project. We are excited to see it grow and develop!

New Staff Spotlight - Ms. Parker, 8th Grade LAL

Ms. Parker joined Lakeside Lighting in mid-November as an 8th grade ELA teacher. She graduated from Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ, and began her teaching career helping adults get their high school diplomas. She has worked at Vineland HS North and most recently at a very small school in Port Republic.

Ms. Parker is most definitely a “crazy cat lady” and loves spending time with her three, or sometimes four, furbabies. She also loves to garden, bake, and curl up with a good book and a cup of hot tea.

She is looking forward to becoming a part of the Lakeside community and getting to know the staff and all of her students.

Lakeside Honor Roll Students for Marking Period One
We are so honored to announce those students who went above and beyond despite all of the challengers of the first Marking Period. We normally have an assembly for them, but due to being out on Remote, we will list all their names below. All students were sent their certificate in the mail. If you have any discrepancies please contact the main office 856-293-2450 and ask for Mrs. Karisko.

Mrs. Votta and Dr. Cook
 Lakeside Lightning,

The School of Tomorrow, Today!

This week we announced the Teacher of the Year and the Education Service Professional of the Year. Our Teacher of the Year is Ms. Votta. Ms. Votta is a 6th grade Science teacher and an AVID teacher. Last year, Ms. Votta coordinated the AVID program while Mrs. Lokuta was out on Maternity Leave.

During the time, Ms. Votta increased Lakeside's community outreach as well as several parent nights focused on healthy initiatives

Dr. Cook, Principal, said of our Teacher of the Year, "Ms. Votta is a very positive member of the staff. She is a student-centered teacher and she collaborates with her colleagues. She is a model teacher for our new staff!"

Mrs. Ronchetti and Dr. Cook

Mrs. Ronchetti was named the Educational Services Professional of the Year. Mrs. Ronchetti works with Mrs. Lopergolo in 7th grade special education math. She has a gift of providing instruction and making
accommodations for students. During the pandemic, Mrs. Ronchetti volunteered to assist with several distributions at Lakeside.

Mrs. Ronchetti donated to our Food Drive in the Spring. When asked about Mrs. Ronchetti's impact at Lakeside, Dr. Cook said. "Mrs. Ronchetti is such a humble person. She never seeks the recognition so I am glad she was awarded this year.

In addition to being an amazing educator, Mrs. Ronchetti, consistently checks in with our front office staff to see if there is anything she can do to help out. We are so grateful for her!"

Can you guess the teachers?

Lakeside Lightning,

The School of Tomorrow, Today!

We are getting into the swing with things this week. Our teachers and students are engaged daily with Remote Learning.

Our staff has seen a dramatic increase in participation with students as we have required them to keep their cameras on for the duration of the class.

We feel that makes the learning environment more effective. If you feel your child should not have their camera on during Remote Learning, please contact their Vice Principal.

Chromebook Camera Policy and Procedures 2020-21

  • LMS Camera Policy
    • Camera on at all times
    • Camera must be on from beginning of class until teacher dismisses class

November 30 - December 4, 2020

Lakeside Lightning,

The School of Tomorrow, Today!

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and extended weekend!

We are returning to remote this week. This was a collaborative decision made by our district, along with other schools in the county based on the most recent spike in the COVID 19 data.  Our team put together a video and corresponding slides for parents and students to re-orient themselves with our schedule. In addition, we outline the expectations for students while they are online based on some of issues that impacted learning. Most notable, our camera policy has been updated.

Chromebook Camera Policy and Procedures 2020-21

  • LMS Camera Policy
    • Camera on at all times
    • Camera must be on from beginning of class until teacher dismisses class
  • Exception- Camera can be shut off if a student needs to step away from the computer temporarily.

Lakeside Lightning,

The School of Tomorrow, Today!

The decision was made this week to go to all Remote Instruction from November 30 - January 18, 2021. In order to prepare for this, we put together a new video reviewing the expectations, schedule and other important areas to consider. We are also including the Google Slides if you would like to review or use the hyper links.

There will be materials for current Virtual Only students to pick up on Tuesday and Wednesday in the front of Lakeside Middle. We will send out information this week.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding with this district decision. The main and guiding factor that lead to the decision is student and staff safety.

New staff spotlights this week

Lakeside Lightning,

The School of Tomorrow, Today!

This week we are spotlighting some new members of the Lakeside Family. Be sure to check out these awesome educators.

Mrs. Straughn, English Language Learners Mrs. Straughn teaches English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades 6-12.  She has been teaching English for the last 8 years.  She loves reading and writing.  One of her favorite things in the whole world is to pour herself a warm cup of coffee or tea, get cozy on the couch,  and get lost in a really good book.  She has a 1 year-old son named Auden, who she named after one of her favorite poets.

She also has a dog named Sanibel, who she named after one of her favorite islands.  She grew up near the beach and has always considered it her happy place, throughout every season, not only summer!  She also enjoys cooking, eating, and running. She is happy and grateful to be a new member of the Lakeside family!

Mrs. Belmonte, Language Arts Teacher

This is her second year here at Lakeside Middle School and she loves working here!  Throughout her time at Lakeside Middle School she has coordinated several clubs and activities. Last year she helped to build our first math interventionist program. She has had an amazing experience working with everyone thus far and has found her “home” here.

This year she has moved from math interventionist to middle school language arts.  She is excited for what the future holds!

We are very happy to have Mrs. Belmonte at Lakeside!

Ms. Gaudio, Social Studies Teacher

Ms. Gaudio joined the Lakeside Middle School staff in September as a 7th grade Social Studies/History teacher. Prior to her employment with Millville Public Schools, she worked for Salem County Technical School and Pittsgrove Township schools as a long-term history teacher.

She is a graduate of The College of New Jersey with a degree in History Secondary Education. When she is not teaching, you can find her traveling around the world or at your local bookstore.

You might recognize her last name and yes she is related to our own Mrs. Gaudio. We are grateful to have both members of the Gaudio family!

Mr. Bird, Music Teacher

Mr. Bird is a new general music teacher at LMS. An alumnus of Millville and Rowan, and a former elementary music teacher from the Camden Charter School Network, Mr. Bird is ready to become a Lightning. When he is not teaching, he loves spending time with his wife, dog, and friends.

He is excited to begin his middle school career where he can allow the students in his class to be creative, expressive, and positively opinionated. His goal for all his students is to leave with a newfound appreciation for music and to discover a musical side within themselves.

Mr. Prohowich, Science Teacher (Long Term Substitute)

Mr. Prohowich is a Millville native who graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Mathematics.

Some of his many interests include anything technology, photography, mapping, hiking, and gardening.

After 20 years as a teacher, he is glad to be a part of the Lakeside team. He started this year as one of the 8th Science Teachers as a long-term substitute.

Ms. McCallion, Science Teacher

Ms. McCallion teaches 7th Grade Science here at Lakeside Middle School. She has a Bachelors Degree in Marine Science and Geology from Stockton University. She also received her Masters Degree from Rowan University this past June in STEM Education.

Some things that she enjoys are hiking, SCUBA diving, paddle boarding, and playing or watching sports (Go Birds)! She is very excited to be working with and getting to know everyone here at Lakeside! Please feel free to stop by and say hi to her in M-102 :)
