LMS Staff supporting the Be Kind Initiative
Lakeside Lightning

It's All About Respect at LMS!!!!

We have another exciting week planned at Lakeside Middle School. Please note that we will be having an Early Dismissal on Friday for Staff Development. We are grateful to have this time for staff to work on their professional development. We use the time wisely and will be continuing our focus on Professional Learning Communities.

On Tuesday we will be inducting our new National Junior Honor Society Members at 6:30 PM in the Auditorium. This is a very special evening as we recognize those students have embodied the tenets of the NJHS such as Leadership, Character, and Citizenship.

We are very excited to be participating in our first Tween Tech STEM workshop at Cumberland County College. This is a girls only conference and is focused on increasing girls into STEM!

Gaston aka Matthew Sooy in Beauty and the Beast
Lakeside Lightning,

It's All About Respect at LMS!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the spring musical Beauty and the Beast. Those who attended enjoyed the show and our students did an amazing job of bringing this Disney classic to the stage. The cast and crew definitely deserve our gratitude as well as Ms. Andrews (Director) and Ms. Bellucci (Assistant Director).

March of Dimes - Help Mrs. Oquendo
My family has been active in raising funds for the March of Dimes for the past 14 years.  My son, David, was born 12 weeks early, and at a time when there was so much uncertainty, the March of Dimes had representatives at the hospital to help us understand what assistance was available to us.  We became an Ambassador Family for Cumberland and Salem Counties, and raised over $20,000.  On March 21st, Lakeside Middle School will be participating in Blue Jeans for Babies.  If you make a donation to Team David O, you will receive a sticker to wear on the 21st, along with your jeans.  If you'd like to donate, please see Mrs. Oquendo in B102, or make a donation directly on the website, and I will make sure you receive a sticker.  We are also looking for team members that would like to walk with us on the boardwalk in Ocean City on April 28th, please let me know if you're interested in walking.
If you'd like more information about my experience with my precious son, or our involvement with the March of Dimes, please stop by to visit this link.

Chefs Anwar and Rebecca working with the AVID students
Lakeside Lightning,

It's All About Respect at LMS!

This week our AVID students, in partnership with the Millville Neighborhood Alliance and Cumberland County College, learned a few new recipes from the Wellness In Schools Program. Wellness in Schools is a national non-profit that teaches kids healthy habits to learn and live better. They partner with public schools to provide nutrition and fitness education, healthy scratch-cooked meals and active recess periods. Their approach improves student outcomes and drives systemic, long-term change, shifting school cultures.

Did you know that over one-third of children under the age of 18 in the United States are overweight or obese? Children spend about 12,000 hours in school between kindergarten and high school graduation, making schools the ideal environment to shape their wellness behavior. Our students learned about these issues and learned how to make several, easy to prepare healthy meals taught by chefs Rebecca and Anwar who are real Chefs!!!

6th Grade Social Studies Team supports Veterans and our Neighbors at Genesis
LMS Students fostering a partnership with Genesis
Lakeside's 6th Grade Social Studies Department took a group of volunteers to the Genesis center to assist them with their King and Queen pageant. Our students were so awesome! They interacted with the residents, escorted the pageant participants to the stage, and even danced with them. We are proud of their enthusiasm and the kindness they displayed during this volunteer activity.

In addition to this event, our 6th graders made Valentine cards for the veterans at the Veteran Hospitals. This was a continuation of our connection with Miss Dottie, who has spent years organizing card drives for our military. Our students also made Valentine door wreaths for the veterans at the Vineland Veterans Home. They were delivered last week. The residents loved them so much that we will be making more for the spring season. These connections have enabled our students to get a taste for volunteerism and they've come to realize that small acts of kindness can really make someone's day brighter.

Mrs. Roche & Mrs. Todd celebrated students who earned a B or higher for the second marking period with a Chic-Fil-A lunch!!!  Keep up the good work!!!
Congratulations for your hard work!
