June 29 - July 3, 2020

Student Exchange 2020
Lakeside Lightning,

Well, it is official... the 2019-20 school year is complete. We do have a lot of stuff left for parents and students to pick up or drop off. Our goal is contact everyone and allow for some time before we dispose of the materials. If you think you may still have materials, please feel free to call the office (856) 293-2450.

Our Student Exchange went very smoothly last week. Tuesday - Friday we distributed locker belongings, collected end of the year work as well Library books. The 8th graders received a T-Shirt, Step Up Certificates and any belongings from their lockers. Although it was hot, we had a great time seeing everyone.

Do you still need to come in and get your belongings or drop off your Chromebook? Our Front Office is open this Monday from 9-12 PM. Check back for more times after the 4th of July holiday.

Yearbooks
If you ordered a yearbook please be patient. Due to COVID 19, the manufacturing company is behind schedule. We anticipate them in late July. We will make announcements, post on this blog and on Facebook when they arrive. We will also let everyone know how they can pick them up. Again, we appreciate your patience. If you have questions, please email Mrs. Sooy (melissa.sooy@millville.org).

Food Distribution
Monday June 29 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the Latch Key area near Target.

Bailey Brown highest math in IXL
Lakeside Lightning,

Happy Father's Day to all of our Lakeside Dads!

Thank you for a wonderful school year. As I said in my weekly email to the staff this year presented a number of unforeseen challenges and how we react to those challenges is all about perspective. As a school we accomplished a lot because we truly worked as a team.

It is an honor that we increased our "staff members" during the Remote Learning Experience. Parents and guardians, we appreciate everything you did to assist us with one of the most challenging experiences all while we were in a Global Pandemic. Students. we are so grateful for everything you did this year whether it was during remote learning or in person.

There will never be a year like this again! So, what's next? Well. we have a few things going on this week to finalize the year.
Thank you for choosing Lakeside! ~Dr. Cook Principal

Lakeside Staff Bitmoji Style
Lakeside Lightning,

It's All About Respect at LMS!

Earlier this week, the district released the following statement:
"George Floyd’s death last week is both devastating to us and yet a deeply painful narrative known all too well in this country.

We, in Millville Public Schools, must stand together against all injustices, including racism, to fight inequality and promote social justice and inclusiveness for all members of our community. There is still much to do. However, we are committed to continue with our efforts in Character Education and Trauma-sensitive schools. We must promote a school culture and climate that is inviting and where all people- students, staff and families are safe and treated fairly and with respect.

Please feel free to contact your child’s school principal, counselor or district personnel if you need."

We want everyone to know that we are working collaboratively as a staff to address racism, inequality and to promote social justice and inclusiveness.  At Lakeside, our students are always at the forefront of our decisions. It is times like these that we must come together and work collaboratively to make things better. Education is the foundation and is the key to society.

Our administrative team, teachers, and staff have been reading, sharing and most importantly discussing these issues in relation to our school community. We will be examining our curriculum, handbook, and policies to ensure we promoting inclusiveness throughout our school. As always, we will keep you updated!

We thank everyone for their support of the Lakeside Community!

With Love,
Dr. Cook, Principal

As public conversations around coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) increase, children may worry about themselves, their family, and friends getting ill with COVID-19. Parents, family members, school staff, and other trusted adults can play an important role in helping children make sense of what they hear in a way that is honest, accurate, and minimizes anxiety or fear. CDC has created guidance to help adults have conversations with children about COVID-19 and ways they can avoid getting and spreading the disease. Check out this link (Click here)

Week 9 Assignments are available
Lakeside Lightning,

It's All About Respect at LMS!

We hope you have enjoyed the beautiful spring weather. We are seeing areas of our state open up and there is a lot of promise with the future! Be sure to continue to follow the guidelines set forth and be safe.

Our staff did an amazing job with locker and classroom clean out this week. We made a schedule that emphasized social distancing and safety. In just under 2 and 1/2 days, we cleaned out all 1100 lockers and organized them by homeroom as we prepare for distribution. As of now we do not have a date on the distribution of the materials (and Chromebook returns). It will most likely be sometime the week of June 8-12. Our teachers will be putting on the finishing touches to their rooms this week in preparation for the summer cleaning. All of the staff who have visited have expressed how much this was not how they wanted to end things. They miss the kids and hope we return to a regular schedule in the fall!

Step Up - June 15th at 6:00 PM - Tune into Quinn Broadcasting
To celebrate our 8th-grade students we will broadcast a pre-recorded Step-Up Ceremony Monday, June 15, 2020, at 6:00 PM through Quinn Broadcasting. There will be a live "pre" show in studio with Dr. Cook and Mrs. Gaunt with special awards and shout outs to our parents, students and staff. A request for video messages to help fill the void of physical congratulations and transitions will be shared with staff and students. Thank you for supporting the LMS 8th-grade Class of 2020.

Nurses Corner
Spring has finally arrived and some parks and outdoor activities are now starting to open. Fresh air and sunshine are vital to promote a healthy lifestyle. Did you know that we get 90% of our vitamin D from exposure to sunlight? Vitamin D helps us absorb calcium and is an essential vitamin. Check out this link to CDC’s guidelines for visiting parks and outdoor recreation and get out there and get some fresh air and have some fun.

Along with the warm weather comes tick season.  Here is a link to CDC’s guidelines for tick prevention.
