February 6 - 10, 2017

Lakeside Lightning,

6th and 7th grade students of the month
Turning Dreams Into Reality

We hope you had a SUPER weekend! At the time of this post, we do not know who will win the Super Bowl but we do know who are the real winners... the Lakeside Staff and Students!!!

Last week was another epic week at Lakeside. Students and staff continued to turn dreams into reality through assessments, innovative learning opportunities and just plain old fun. The week was capped off with the 6th grade Valentines Dance. The 6th graders had a lot of fun as they danced to the latest songs, enjoyed the snacks and made memories. Thank you to Mr. Godfrey and the 6th grade team for supporting this event.

On Monday, February 6, we will be having an assembly for the 6th grade students from 9-10:30 am.  Tim Schuler, an apiarist (beekeeper) from the NJ Dept of Agriculture will be joining us to speak with the 6th graders about beekeeping and the honey bee population in New Jersey.

The 6th grade science students are currently working on a PBL (Problem Based Learning) about honey bees to investigate the possible causes of the declining bee population across the state of NJ.  The students will be using the information that Mr. Schuler presents to help them understand why honey bee colony collapse is such an important environmental and economic issue.  All of the 6th graders will eventually be making a bee-friendly garden here on Lakeside’s campus to help support our local population of honey bees here in Millville.  Having Mr. Schuler here is a unique opportunity for our students to gain information that will aid them in developing an understanding of the importance of pollinators to agriculture and our environment in general. We are looking forward to this unique learning opportunity.

National School Counselors Week - Message from Dr. Gentile, Superintendent of Schools
Our community counts on us to be there for its children. As we statistically score high in areas like children living in poverty, unemployment, and teen pregnancy, we also have staff who consistently go the extra mile to help kids.

This week, February 6 – 10, is National School Counselor Week and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Millville counselors for their efforts and hard work.  We have a great staff of Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, SAC’s, & CST that do so much for our students and their families.

So often counselors are working behind the scenes and doing things that are not necessarily noticed, but are extraordinarily important to the kids. Sure, we may drive you crazy when we are asking for that extra chance for a student, but we often are the voice of the child who may be going through more than you know. Please join me this week and send your thanks to the Millville counselors, and remember that, “Everyone you meet is going through a battle that you may know nothing about.  Be kind always.”

Congratulations to the 6th and 7th grade Students of the Month
