Lakeside Lightning,

The World is Yours: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

This past week another school was victimized by a horrendous tragedy. Our hearts go out to community of Parkland, Florida. We also know that their is a national debate in progress regarding guns, mental health and politics.

As a school, however, it is our mission to create a safe learning environment. We take this responsibility very seriously which is why we do the following:

  • Follow policies and protocols on any suspicious behavior
  • Work closely with the Millville Police Department
  • Train staff and students on crisis situations such as fire drills, lock down drills and evacuation drills
  • Require all staff to go through safe and security training
  • Work closely with our District Crisis Coordinator Mr. Bob Cirroco
  • Have a dedicated Security team that monitors the front desk, hallways, perimeter and classrooms
  • Require all visitors to sign in and enter only at the front desk
  • Work collaboratively to investigate threats
Again, we take these issues very seriously and work everyday to keep the students of Lakeside Middle School safe and secure. We appreciate the support of the parents and community members as this issue requires teamwork and trust to be successful!

The Multiple Teaching Strategy Study (MTSS) is researching how student incentives can help teachers who have limited time and resources implement multiple high-impact, evidence-based teaching strategies in their busy classrooms. Mrs. Stroup's students were required to take initial benchmark tests and then were randomly assigned to work on language arts or math. Students are required to log an average of three hours of time each week during the study.

During the course of the study, students are expected to increase by at least one grade level in their assigned area. So far, she had students that have increased their math skills anywhere from .4-1.8 grade levels and students who have increased their language arts skills by 1.2-2.7 grade levels.  Her classroom will receive over $1,000 worth of prizes; including posters, t-shirts, gift certificates, mini bluetooth speakers, earbuds, a waterproof camera and teacher gifts during the 12 weeks the study is underway.

Hey everybody! This is Gabby Akiatan. For those who don't know me, I'm an 8th grade student here in Lakeside and I have a service project. I’m hosting a Diaper Drive. So this Valentine's Day, help me show some love to poor families with babies by donating diapers and baby wipes. Drop off locations are at Mrs. Kern's room Y131 and Mrs. Morgan's room M135. Thank you and our Black History Month Fact is: Did you know that Marie Van Brittan Brown, a nurse and inventor, invented a precursor to the modern home TV security system.  Ms. Brown decided to invent this security system because the crime rate was high in her NY City neighborhood and the local police didn’t always respond to emergencies.  This motorized camera was able to project images onto a TV monitor, it included a two-way microphone to speak with a person outside, and an emergency alarm button to notify the police.
