Lakeside Lightning,

Turning Dreams Into Reality

Students in Ms. Grennon and Mrs. Powell's class at the "Book Tasting"
The leaves are starting to change and the weather is starting to feel more like Fall. October is here!

Last week the Lakeside Lightning staff and students had an awesome week. There were so many cool things going on throughout the building. Our staff had the opportunity to end the month on a relaxing note. During their Common Planning Time, staff were able to work on relaxation techniques for themselves and their students. The feedback from the sessions were very positive. Each month we are going to do something special for the staff because they work so hard for our students!

This week we have the Steered Straight Assembly on Monday. This all school assembly will feature positive messages for our students. A big thank you to Mrs. Jost for coordinating this event to help our climate and culture!

In addition, this week is abbreviated due to the Staff In-service on Friday. Also, students and staff will have off on Monday, October 10th for the Columbus Day holiday. Enjoy your long weekend!

Literacy Initiative - Have you ever been to a "Book Tasting"?
Ms. Grennon and Mrs. Powell at the Book Tasting
We have been quite pleased with the Language Arts teachers this year as they have begun to roll out a literacy initiative that will revolutionize our school. Last week we highlighted Mrs. Benfer and her team for distributing close to 5,000 books for our new in-class libraries. This week Ms. Grennon and Mrs. Powell came up with a unique idea to expose the kids to the various genres through a "Book Tasting."

During the "Book Tasting" students were able to enjoy some treats as they looked through books from the various genres such as mystery, non fiction, and even comedy. The students had a great time during the "Book Tasting" and were very appreciative of the effort that Ms. Grennon and Mrs. Powell put into the event!

What is Respect? An excerpt from an upcoming newsletter for parents by Mrs. Padro
At Lakeside Middle School, we prioritize the needs for respect and integrity in our students. This is because we know that those qualities are essential in leading a professionally and socially rewarding life.

Please aid us in this endeavor by doing your part at home.  Together, we can help your children and our students become the finest individuals they can be!

Blogger of the Week - Ms. Rauch - 8th grade SE Teacher
Ms. Rauch, who is in her first year at LMS but 5th year in MPS, has recently entered the blogging world to share her classroom story with the rest of the world. Her blog Real World 8th Grade Math  allows her to highlight the various activities the students are engaged with as well as reflect on the learning process in and out of the class.

This week Ms. Rauch hosted her first 'auction.' During the auction, the students learned the art of the auctioneer as well as had the opportunity to bid on items that were interesting to them. Ms. Rauch has a passion to make the math learned in 8th grade a "real" as possible which is why she focuses a lot on the economics. She said, "I have the students paying rent, taking loans, paying utilities, earning money and reflecting on their spending within the math lessons." Thanks Ms. Rauch for your hard work!!!
